  • On day 1 this was a bit dull, really didn't make much of an impression -- but revisited on day 3 and it had really come to life. Orchard and stone fruits on the nose. Pear and stone fruit on the palate with some quince and marzipan notes. Good weight with a bit of viscosity. This was interesting, but think I prefer his St. Joseph Blanc -- even if it is a bit more expensive.

  • Ok, so I poured this for the first time and did a double-take. I swear there was something in the color that said, "I'm a red, I'm a red." Must have been a senior moment, like incipient color-blindness, except I think that's genetic, not incremental, but what do I look like, an opthamologist? Or as Samuel Johnson reportedly said when asked to describe a flower, "I'm no botanist, Sir."

So there's some phantom pink thing winking at me, and the nose is rich and a little tropical, starting first with ripe white peach migrating to pineapple and deep melon aromas. It's got ample fruit and weight in the mouth, and I confess that on its own it finishes a little hot and perhaps overly tannic, and grabbing the bottle I was dismayed to see 14.5% alcohol.

Bummer. This really isn't all that great an experience on its own. But with food? Shazzam! My wife made a baked halibut with herbed breadcrumbs and we shot it with fresh lemon and suddenly the conversation (between the fish and the wine) got very interesting. It's always interesting talking to my wife in case you were wondering or if she is reading this note.

I don't know for sure but I suspect the heavy alcohol and maybe oak will not ultimately resolve in favor of the overall impression, but throw this against more substantial fare than you might otherwise imagine and you may be surprised at the ensuing dialog.

  • Not quite as interesting as the last bottle, but doesn't show the heat, either. Very nice.

  • By far the most interesting vintage of this wine among the three I've had back to the 2005, and also the most expansive. Unlike the 2006 it's full without seeming dark and dreary, still has a lot of brightness to it but with a light florality and a deeper savoriness to add interest. Unfortunately as it warms up the alcohol becomes spirity and literally wincing. Needs to be served right out of the fridge to show its best.
