Robinson wine dinner at mad cap. Recently disgorged and released from chateau. Served in magnum. Remarkably fresh and youthful. Large format matters. Loved this wine.

[Magnum] This was my favourite Krug magnum of the trip by quite a margin, outshining absolutely superb magnums of ’88 and ’89 regular release. First of all, this still has terrific bubbles and effervescence and is showing extremely fresh and clean. The nose has amazing coffee cream and milk chocolate in a Coffee Crisp (Canadian chocolate bar) sort of way. Sweet espresso crema. There is a caramel and toffee but it really isn’t that advanced or dark. Toasty hazelnut. Still has apple and citrus zest and acid. Cinnamon spice. Fine mousse. Clean, bright, crisp, still shockingly lively. I absolutely loved this and am going to try to get others.

Very fine mousse. Rather delicate for a Krug. Nose is classic Krug- biscuit, hazelnut, ripe orchard fruits with a touch of bruised apple oxidation. Delicate and lighter on the palate than I would have liked. Elegant, not a blockbuster. Perfectly in balance but mid weight and mid weight only. Seems a touch flabby as if the acidity doesn’t quite cut through the fruit. The ripeness of 82 I expect. Was left wanting and expecting more. Perhaps best to sell the other 11 given the price tag for these bottles! Will try again in a year’s time to see if it just needed more time to unwind but my feeling this is very much in the drink up phase.

Château Lafite - the Rematch (Cafe Maxx, Pompano Beach, Florida): Simply gorgeous Krug. This is what you hope for but rarely find - terrific freshness combined with the complexity of age. Only medium weight yet flavorful, notes of wheat thins, Meyer lemon and peach. Perfumed and supremely elegant. Much different from the standard ‘82 Krug I have had over the years even though this one was purchased about 8 years ago.

Unfortunately, bad luck this time. The most precious bottle of our vintage Krugs tasting had cork disease. It was impossible to get acquainted with this wine. I was very curious to try Krug with 25 years of aging on its lees and such late disgorgement.
So next time!
