This wine was well beyond its moment. I'd have expected this to hold on longer, given its vineyards. Funky, stewed fruit barely remains and this wine is all now dried leaves, spent tea leaves, black olive brine and mushroomy forest floor.

Decanted and drank over dinner. Nose: Beef tongue, chocolate covered acai berries, plum butter. Palate: Supple tannins, smokey complexity, long finish. I was ready to dislike this based on popular opinion but it drank wonderfully. Thrilled -

Giant Wine Sale & Tasting at Cellar on Greene Columbia, SC 6/18/2011: I'm not sure what to think with this wine. It is a 2005, so that means we are 5 1/2 years past crush, and about 4 years past bottling. I don't think it is ready yet. The fruit is mountain grown, and it is not giving up the fight yet. I get a touch of that green pepper herbaceousness on the nose, with some menthol and alcohol. The wine is fruity in a controlled, subdued manner, sort of typical to mountain grown fruit. There is an underlying white pepper spiciness. The tannins are mild. Just past medium bodied. I get some chocolate on the finish I attribute to medium heavy toast oak. I'll bet this will be terrific in a few more years.

Typical Atalon merlot. A lot of structure, fruit shows after being open for a couple of hours. Tends to the European. Good now, will still drink well in a couple of years.

Second Cousins (Farpointe Cellar): The nose had chocolate and pencil lead, clove and thyme, and some raspberry and plum at the end. The palate was smooth, with dark fruit and milk chocolate, graphite and herbs, and a little herbs on the finish,
