Community Tasting Notes (2)

  • By far the finest of the three bottles but that is because i finally treated it properly, I now understand. I opened this one at about 6 pm and we had a first small glass at 6:30 - it had been coming to room temperature during that time. We drank 2/3 of it with smoked trout and asparagus. The wine was gorgeous, marine and salty, creamy in texture and still entirely focused and vibrant. These was still fruit - pears and maybe peaches, not the citrus variety - i think that's probably about the 93 vintage being warm. This wine showed grand cru density and breadth on the nose and on the palate, and one experienced blind taster called it Grand cru, and said that the balance and minerality made him think Chevalier. We drank the last third with cheese and it was only getting better. Man. if I could have a do-over on the two bottles I brought to large wine dinners and just opened and poured out without allowing the wine enough air time, and at too cool a temperature.

  • At first I was worried that this was over-the-hill, but it actually needed a half hour to open up (I did not decant). Beautiful mature Chassagne, with pungency and good balance. airy and pure aromas that show stone fruit and also a mineral sense, a bit of soil too. The palate is fresh and pure with fruit, butter, and a salty minerality. It shows the flesh and ample body that I'd expect, and it's entirely delicious.
