  • Still dark red with only a hint of brick, fruity on the nose with some minerality, still quite some acidity and tannins on the palate. A little disjointed, not sure if more air or more aging would help. These 96s have always been a bit tough and brooding...

  • Bricked ruby. Dark cherry dominates with hints of red and blue berries on the nose. Initially closed and opened slowly. At its best 1+ hours after decanting. A big wine with dense fruit but framed by good structure and acidity for its age. Medium-long finish. Very, very good. Worth lingering over.

  • Ruchottes-Chambertin Dinner (Boka - Chicago IL): Tasted single blind. Lush black fruit nose with lots of power and ripe aromas. Palate also shows lots of black fruit power and concentration to start, just a little simpler on finish, with modest spice. Very easy to enjoy, this is at its peak now.

  • I opened this for Easter dinner (lemon-thyme marinated roasted rack of lamb, gratin of potatoes and Provencal tomatoes), letting it breathe about 3 hours in a bottle-shaped decanter. Right from the get-go, it smelled amazing, with crystalline dark but pure fruit, light on its feet. The palate, at first, was tight tight tight, just really not wanting to come out and play. The decant time softened the wine, darkened the color somewhat, and allowed it to express itself in its own way. To put it mildy, this was awesomely delicious, perfumy black and light red fruit dancing around each other in beautiful little orbits, the whole thing just starting to turn to secondary aspects with a silky mouthfeel, spicy acidity & a long fruity finish. Shockingly young, despite it's age. Think of it as a male ballet dancer just coming into his own, masculine yet elegant and lithe. Man I am loving some of these 1996s!

  • Good floral nose works well with combination red and black fruit. More black fruit on palate with lots of dried thyme, anise and tarragon flavors today. Not showing the sharp acidity of many other 96s. Moderate length, so I'm not sure if this is a long, long term cellar hold, but I'd expect it will show well for another decade.
