  • Sweet nose of rock melon and honeydew. Honey, apricots, tangerines, kamquat, and orange peels. Low on alcohol, high sugar, with hints of barley on the finish.

  • Drinking at peak with similar ripe golden fruits as the 99 but this has limey acidity and a bit more powdery finish. Still good quality though nothing exceptional.

  • In a lovely place right now with developing smoky and hay elements on top of bright green apple and lemony fruit. While it's not the most complex or layered Riesling, there's a sense of real clarity and focus here that I really like with the '01 acidity keeping it really vibrant, refreshing and beautifully balanced.

  • Cellar Raid: Riesling (Extra Space, Singapore): First of the off-dry Rieslings, and this was certainly a pleasant start. The bottle showed far better than the one I tried slightly more than a year ago. Still a deceptively light colour, but there was a lovely mature German Riesling nose here, with caramel, honey, white flowers and nice yellowish fruits. Palate also showed quite a bit of age, with kumquats, dried muscat grapes, limes and lemons, all ran through with lovely acidity. Sweetness had gone down a bit, but there was still a nice fruitiness that reamined. It finished quite satisfyingly with a good dose of telltale Wurzgarten spice. Almost everyone thought it was a Mosel, I lucked out in guessing Wurzgarten, but actually thought it may be older given the how tight the last bottle was. This wine was not a blockbuster given the strength of the vintage and the great plot that the wine came from, but it was nevertheless a really nice, classic Mosel Spatlese.

  • Surprisingly advanced with rich honeyed notes and developed smoky elements on top of bright pear, citrus fruit and minerals. Very polished and streamlined with that lovely '01 acidity keeping it very fresh, really enjoyable.
