  • The color of this wine is more like a Cabernet than a Burgundy- black red core with opaque rim, now showing slight browning. Nose initially showed dark fruits and plummy characters and with air some vanilla oak and spice. The palate is medium bodied with masses of dark cherry, plums and cassis. It also shows quite a lot of French oak and quite firm acid. A very powerful Burgundy showing the style of the excellent 2005 vintage and the style of the house. There is arguably too much acid on the back palate and some may find the oak a little overpowering but I like the wines from this producer and this is a very good wine though not a great one.

  • Harmand Geoffroy tasting (Wine What Else): Shares a clear family resemblance with the village wines, with the nose opening with the same mixture between funk, oak and sweet raspberries. Palate was the first that showed a distinct Gevrey meatiness to it, along with juicy acidity. Once again though, there was a sense of rather heavy-handed extraction and some of that bitter herbs moving through what was otherwise some good fruit with quite a bit of power in it. Finish was longish, again with bitter herbs and firm tannins expressing themselves. Clearly the most open of the 2005s, but not very enjoyable at this stage.
