Community Tasting Notes (1)

  • Our sommelier had a cheeky grin as he smelled the wine and I was a little unsure what to expect from this Villages wine at age 22 and not from a ‘so called’ top vintage. The aroma was pure Nuits, laden with sweet earth, a little iron and smoked meats. There was also an added dimension here of what the Japanese refer to as umami, that hard to describe, extra savoury sensory perception. In the mouth it was lacey and gentle with lovely precision and energy. I have never had an 86 that does not have a little bitterness, this did not! I have never had a Nuits that didn’t have at least a little perceptible grip, this did not! The bottle was in terrific condition and the wine fresh, pure, fragrant and ethereal. The finish was a little short but the whole experience exceeded my expectations and I exclaimed to my wife ‘how can you put a number on a wine like this?’ and as quick as a flash she retorted ‘the restaurant did, they slapped a 200 on it!’
