  • This was surprisingly good. We bought this en premier and have been trying it ever since it landed -- it's our wedding year -- and this (our 8th bottle of 12) was by far the best we have had. Decanted for 2 hours, then back into the bottle to take to dinner. Still very dark and relatively unevolved in color, this had a lovely perfumed "classic Bordeaux" nose. Pichon Baron always has lovely purity of fruit, and in this case that has balanced very well with the fundamentally hard nature of the 2002 vintage to create a wine that has oodles of crunchy black fruit with plenty of backbone and "bite." No hurry to drink these; one of the better 2002s we have had.

  • Looking very young and dark - fresh impression on the nose - black fruits, tobacco, coffee and pepper on the palate. Lacking a little bit of pressure on the palate but very good! Give it a few hours of air! 94 pts.

  • Blind tasting
Medium garnet, some bricking and sediment
Aromatics medium +. Leather, earth, tobacco resin, dried leaves, old oak. Dark cherry. I didn't get the graphite or late bell peppers until after the reveal. Very complex.
Palate has a medium body. Acid medium +. Tannins medium +, medium grained and integrated. Alcohol medium +. Dark plum, dried herbs
Dry glass notes of soy sauce and wood
Finish has a medium length. Balanced somewhat towards the tannins
Not surprisingly this is all tertiary, but still has some pyrazines and darker fruit. I guessed a 2004 Sangiovese, but in retrospect the aromatics and tannin structure are classic aged Bordeaux.
    Drink now

  • Opaque garnet with moderate bricking at rim
High intensity aromatics of red and black fruit/ currant - quite complex with many secondaries of graphite/ cedar/ green pepper/ soy sauce and smoke - all underlaid by perfectly integrated oak spice aromas
Medium plus body with palate of plum and black currant with tobacco and dry earth
Medium plus tannins - medium grained and very well integrated - medium plus alcohol and medium plus acidity
Beautiful length led by fruit/ oak and alcohol - again just a perfectly integrated wine at this time
Dry glass aromas are just amazing
This is drinking very well now and I believe is at its plateau, but I do enjoy some fruit in my aged wines, so some might see further benefit from aging

(Château Pichon-Longueville Baron) 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot. Strong color, similar to that of the 2003. Nose showing considerable development—earthy and rich, spicy and good. Palate quite dry and smooth, but a little lacking in charm. Will the tough tannins come around? Savory, mineral, very dry finish, but good concentration for the vintage. Drink in five to 10 years. Winery Spotlight: Château Pichon-Longueville
