Woah, such purity and precision here. 3 hours in the decanter, and honestly could have used a few more hours. Still so young! This seems to be a wine that will early last another 50 years. Just a brilliant and classic example of Barolo.

Served alongside a '71 Monfortino Unicorn, this was a wine I once had (out of magnum) at the Vinous Monfortino vertical in London in 2014. The cork from my 750 came out without a hitch, and was pristine. I suspect the wine may have been heat-affected somewhere along the way, as the nose evidenced a raisiny aspect that was a bit off-putting, especially at first. It dissipated over time, and in any case was not mirrored on the palate. That featured classic 'tar & rose' notes alongside savory, concentrated dark berries, camphor, sweet smoke and some leather. The tannins were sweet and soft. I estimate this wine to be midstream in its development, especially for better stored bottles. The wine was much more evolved than at the Vinous vertical.

The youngest of the 3 Monfortino (74,87,87) we did compare and the most accessible. Near its apogee but still no problem to keep it for another ten years that’s the great ting about Monfortino! Seducing flavors of ripe berries completed with some smoky mushroom truffle flavors and some spicy aromas. Medium bodied with perfectly balanced tannins and very long finish.

Decanted for half an hour. A complex and saturated nose of blackberries, earthy black truffles, dried meat and leather. Resolved fine-grained tannins with thinning fruits. Showing hints of oxidative sherry note, going downhill. (80/100)

(Giacomo Conterno Monfortino Riserva) This has another stunning nose but seemed a bit more developed than it should have. Complex nose of the now trademark Conterno hot rock minerality, hay, root vegetables, cocoa, raspberry and dark cherries. Wonderfully silky texture with great concentration and extract. Majestic palate with very secondary fruit. Like spider silk on the palate. Explosive complexity on the finish with great length. I would say this is near peak but I am sure will improve a little over the next five years and hang on for ten after that.
