Mostly 1998s (Washington, DC): Lots of sediment. Flavors of mulled black cherries and currants, with pickling spices, sun-dried tomatoes, black pepper, tar, dried violets. The palate has softened but still dusty tannins with tangy acidity. Fruit is mulled and a bit muddied, but still going (currant, fig paste). All sorts of roasted red pepper, green olives, black pepper, chewing tobacco, some graphite and tar. I guessed this as a Cote Rotie – not too far off.

I bow down to a wine this good and true after 30 years and made only in Graillot’s third vintage I think. Just perfectly true Syrah that outshines its appellation.

- Garnet color with medium forming legs and aromas of coffee, dusty and green olive. It's balanced with a light/medium body. Smooth texture with a medium finish - Getting old but still very nice. Smooth. Green olives on the aroma.

Delicious and perfectly mature Syrah. This is why you age wine, of course! Drank off the list at Cafe Carmellini and it totally delivered.
