Community Tasting Notes (1)

  • I managed to pluck this off a list of bottles for sale that had circulated a bit before getting to me, largely because I think no one else recognized the terroir. Or maybe everyone knew something I didn't. Granted it was a bit of a risky proposition, stored by someone else for 30+ yrs, from a marginal vintage (though apparently the high end 91s drink great), and likely past prime. But nevertheless I assessed it as worth the risk. And my first Croix Rameau to boot...

The wine displayed a true forest floor nose, that could not be more classical burgundy. R picked up some licorice; G some tar. To me roasted chestnuts and decaying leaves. In the mouth a velvety smooth and dark wine with notes of smoke, underbrush, ham, brown sugar and bitters/digestifs. It reminded me a bit of a Barolo in that regard. It was a combination of lovely and severe, and I'm glad I got a chance to try it. Seems like it was a very well stored bottle, still probably deserved to have been drunk 5-10 years prior. In a word, memorable.
