Opened the 18 liter bottle for my 70th birthday. This arrived nine months ago with the cork pushed, as in the label picture. I had been sweating it ever since (although on discovery I had wrapped the neck tightly in a thick plastic bag and many rubber bands). We opened it, and discovered that only about 5 mm of the cork was engaged with the neck of the bottle. It tasted no different than the many 750ml bottles of the 2004 that I have enjoyed over the past few years. Apparently a very small amount of air can be tolerated by a bottle of this size. (Bye-the-bye, we finished it - plus 38 other bottles of various wines at the party.)

Pungent grape aroma upon opening the bottle. Rested in decanter for 4 hours. Initial impression on first taste is notes of figs and raisins. The finish is quick but tart. A bit strong without food. After a bite of beef and the introduction of some fat to cut the tannins it was more enjoyable. A morsel of chocolate, dark or milk helps to finish the bottle. It certainly improved with additional time to open up.

Like others have said, the nose was closed, the wine tight. Still, there was pleasant sweet mushrooms and pine resin, along with some bramble fruit. Pretty solid structure: decent acidity and near silky tannins. with blackberry, more resin, finishing with fried mushrooms.
There was nothing bad about this wine, per se, and it seems to have aged quite well; but it was nothing spectacular either.

- Brick color with slow forming legs and aromas of dusty and phenolic. It's unbalanced and has flavours of fig and mushroom with a full body. Leathery texture with a medium finish - Typical Montefalco, very tannic and takes several days to mellow. Some nice mellow fruit on the front after a couple of days open.

Starting to come around. This can still age a few more years.
