  • Lifted florals, a bit herbal n light unripe strawberries but with interesting green peppercorns. Sharp berry acidity.

  • TMM Dinner (aka d'Yquem and extras) (Absinthe, Boat Quay): Finally, a very nice Burgundy after two mediocre bottles. The nose had a slightly modern ripeness and polish about it, with sweet aromas of macerated cherries, raisins and dried prunes wed to little herbal notes that suggested ginseng and angelica root. The palate showed slightly mushy, powdery tannins – a very different mouthfeel from the quartet of Cote de Nuits reds on the same flight. The wine was still very decently balance and focused though, with nice flavours of dark cherries, berries and plums, alongside some masculine, meaty currents underneath. Good finish as well, with nice little bits of peppery spice and dried flowers littered amongst dark fruited notes that showed a lovely glowing sweetness on their high-tones and a little minerally undertow beneath. Yummy stuff, and in about the right place for drinking.

  • Camille Giroud Clos des Chenes 1er Cru 1998 is a hit. Took it for granted that it would be ripe and ready for pleasure but no. Closed for business. After a couple of hours in the bottle and some time in the glass it begins its metamorfosis. I have no idea about the vineyard, grape quality or nothing (not a burghound). I get it just because it is good. Red berries and dark fruits in a multi-layer coat combined with a lovely spice from the oak - cinnamon, warmed boat deck, low tar, red earth and an ounce licorice. The taste is smooth, while being powerful. Fine cheese loving acid and sand like tannins with an aftertaste that is deliciously refreshing.
