  • I found this 1996 bottle, it is a funnny story, helping and old woman that her husband dued and for thanking me ask me to chose a bottle of wine in a box, There was nothing interesting in there but i went through bottle to bottle until i stop on this 1996 Castilllo de Almansa. I knew that wine would be a tresor or undrinkable. But i knew as where it came from that i might found something good. (regarding support the aging) I just drank the bottle with a friend a few weeks ago a we fall down of our chair. I guess somme taster underestimate the potential of ageing of this cheap wine. We tought we were drinking a special great vintage bottle as it was good. It might be a luck but don't hesitate to let it sleep a few year longer in your cave. After 15 years it was just perfect, round in mouth and with and unterminable final... tannins wassmooth flexible while being well present. I wish i speack a better english to be more explicite. So let it go...
    The legs are Slow.
    The body is Full.
The wine finishes Long. Unfortunately because i drank the wine in august i don't remember all the details as the aroma, the color. Sorry!

  • This is generally a very tannic wine but the 1998 bottle we sipped last night had none. I'm happy I didn't leave it longer since it was slightly too old. Still very enjoyable but a '99 or 2000 would likely have been better.

  • I disagree with the others that said this should be drunk earlier. The bottle we had tonight may have been at its best but, given the big mouth of tannins we got, I think it could have lasted another 1yr to 2yr. We were very impresseed for such an inexpensive wine. There was lots of fruit, a touch of pepper, and still some tannin to pucker one up a bit.

Having written that, let's be honest and say this is definately not a "wonderful" wine. It's rough but not wild. We had it with (vegetarian) mousaka and the complex tastes of the mousaka, the bechamel, etc, seemed to be a perfect paring: a rough, robust main-course complemented by a rough-complex wine.

It's a great value and I'll buy another bottle to replace the 10yr old we just drank.
