  • Impressive and unique. Reminds me of a cross between a Cru Beaujolais and an older Rioja. Surprisingly bright and fresh, almost racy, with cranberries, cherries and herbs, along with supple tannins.

  • I have had European wines made from this grape--from Savoie--but I only recently learned that an American winery--and one I respect--was making a Mondeuse cuvee. It's good and identifiably Californian in its ripeness. It's not as refreshing or well-structured as its Savoie relation. It smells, especially upon opening, as if it were vinified or blended with Pinot noir (I don't think it was--just smells that way). Later, a more typical gamey, herby character emerges, a juiciness that just avoids excess. Smoothly tannic and a little mellow. It's nice, just lacking in verve.
