  This wine surprised me. A very pleasant surprise, that is. Don't get me wrong, I expected to enjoy it - I don't buy any wines that I don't expect to enjoy. It's just that I've had this one bottle tucked away in my cellar for a long time... When I went into my cellar to pull a bottle to go with a maple-chipotle marinated skirt steak I was thinking a full bodied red, but despite ample choices I found myself unsure. Then I noticed my '98 Quinta do Vale Dona Maria and thought, why not? I wondered if it was still alive, did it have the tell-tale fruit that makes this a special wine, in short - did I wait too long? Thankfully the answer was "no"! This wine sang from start to finish. Smoke, black fruits, integrated tannins, balanced acidity - a wine that complemented the meal nicely and put a smile on my face. A pleasure...
