Knights of Alba (KOA) Candidate Dinner (Ai Fiori (Langham Hotel on 5th Ave)): Bonus to realize that we have a few more of these because it was just wonderful. Bright and crisp and cherries and minerals and with just that bit of lift that is so nice in great wine. It again really enjoyed some time in the glass to open up. Drinking great now but does seem to have the stuffing to be one of those great old wines too.

Mascarello's 1997 Barolo is classic with a beautiful nose of tar, sweet cherry, and leather. Soft and resolved yet still lively with a fine acidic core and fresh cherry flavors. Elegant and sexy, this is very good and ready to go with no upside from here.

Ceretto Wine Club in NYC (Il Gattopardo): Much better experience than the previous person but I suppose previous person didn't have a great one. This was wonderful (I've never had a B. Mascarello that wasn't). Fresh and almost minty in style. Darker fruits. Pretty and lightly floral. It's probably young in the drinking window but it's at least generally there. Very enjoyable.

I had high expectations for this bottle and felt that it was simply average. I used to drink a lot of Nebbiolo-based wines, but northern italians are so variable that I've pretty much left the region for burgundy permanently. This bottle simply reminded me why I left.

A bit sluggish and did not bring the profile of a typical mascarello
