Leathery and animale on the nose, brambly fruit. blackberries. Lovely freshness to the fruit on the nose and the oak still prevalent in a cedary style. Fresh acidity a fine grippy tannin in the mouth. Slightly lighter style in the mouth, black raspberry, red berries. Some spices in the mouth, a smoky element aswell. That berried fruit and a leanness comes through in the mid plate, Tannins slightly drying, and a touch of heat in the finish, but a good length.
Had with Lasagne and a tomato and red onion salad. Worked well with the tomato elements. A good match overall.

Drank over two nights. A slightly bretty note to this, though a good core of brambly fruit tinged with damson and black raspberries. Some mild sweet mediterranean spices to it. There is some dried herb notes in the finish. Good grippy acidity and fine grained but grippy tannins. The bretty note was more animale/leathery than merdre, which on the second night was still there if a little cleaner.
An excellent example of aged Carignan, which proves Carignan has the ability to age, the 10% Syrah does give it some lift though and juiciness in the fruit.

2002 was an underrated vintage in the Languedoc and this is still in lovely condition. Carignan at its best.

A private dinner (Restaurant The Fat Duck, Bray-on-Thames, UK): Rich and warm, nutty and spicy, leather, aromatic herbs, garrigue, elegant and supple, ripe tannins, lovely depth of flavour, attractive freshness and grip, good length.
