  • double decanted 3 hours before serving and enjoyed over 5 hours

    bright gold mature color, honey, marzipan, decadent blood orange and hints of lime on the nose, on the palate much more an Auslese than a Spatlese- to be expected given the vintage and that this is an auction wine, viscous and rich with orange, tangerine, lime and marzipan notes- all dripping with honey and overlaid with a celestial network of pinpoints of white acids, mineral and slate notes underlying the decadent fruits, this is every bit as good as the magnificent 2005 but here there is more heft and opulence, a stunner of a wine and fully mature, good lengthy finish that is just barely starting to weaken at the very tail end, this has a good decade left in its prime I think- but there is no need to wait.

  • Maureen Nelson comes to town and we drink mostly red Burgs. (Il Corso.): While not revealing all that much on the nose, save for a bit of sulfur, this is one of the biggest wines I've had from Schaefer, whose wines I've usually found understated, though in a pleasant way. Big boned, youthful and lively with undeniable richness, the fruit is quite ripe and orange citrus and tropical dominated, though the acidity balances it out nicely. With air the fruit pulls back a little to let the mineral elements enjoy more of the spotlight. Lip smackingly delicious! A/A-.

  • This was the wine that made me see the light about Willi Schaefer. I bought as much as I could afford.
    Barely developing a golden hue, this is still an adolescent wine that need more time to show its best. The ultra-clean botrytis component adds a buttery texture to wine's palate presence, but it's the wine's bristling undercurrent of slate minerality and zesty acidity that made it and continues to make it one of the finest wines I've ever tasted by Herr Schaefer.
