  • Great Dry Riesling Tasting of 42 best of the Best in Düsseldorf

    4. Flight

    Künstler Kirchenstück Auslese trocken (90)

very ripe and broad, honey, acidity well integrated, for me too fat, a kind of botrytis so a lack of elegance, one glas as food pairing would be perfect

  • Has that fluorescent yellow urine color that is relatively deep. Very aromatic on the nose with loads of tropical fruits, green apple, some mature Riesling toast in the background. Very exotic and semillon-like. Definitely some firm minerality in there, some florality, no obvious oak influence. No diacetyls or signs of botrytis. On the palate the wine is dry, has high acidity, moderately high phenolics, high alcohol. Moderate weight, no creaminess. Wine drank well over the next several days. Wine is balanced, has good length, great intensity, and good complexity. Not a ton of finesse here, texturally big and brawny, very good expression of place. An extrememly distinctive wine... this is a full throttled, tropical, texturally big style of Riesling. Like a Pfalz with very high alcohol. This won't be to everyone's tastes but is an excellent wine in its style which is frankly uncommon with Riesling. I think it has room to improve and has all of the criteria to age well. " Excellent" to "outstanding" wine with a few bonus points for distinctiveness.

  • V big nose - creamy richness - v. attractive. Massive attack. V full indeed. V concentrated Riesling fruit - but quite different to the essence that you might find in the finest M-S-Rs. Lovely wine, shame about the price.
