I’m sure there are better bottles out there but on first inspection the wine was within tolerances. It had some balsamic lift from its volatility and notes of chocolate and raisins. It was tarry with plenty of earth and whilst the palate had some sweetness it never fully bloomed.

This is smooth and saturated, herbal nose becoming slightly hollow but matched with food, this would be lovely but not profound. The nose has some issues, and the palate is a bit dry with some bitterness to the finish.

(bottle number 3872) Nose of beef bullion and a touch burnt at first. Lots of fennel on the palate. The tannins are still firm but soft, giving structure and a touch of dryness, but overall the palate is quite juicy. Long finish with good sustain. The palate shows good sweetness and it's quite fresh, showing fennel, strawberry and roses. The wine gets darker in profile with air, the strawberry turning to cherry. That initial burnt aspect turns to woodsy, earthy, and smoky on the palate. Very rich, a giving palate, with huge midplate lift, quite juicy, and a long, sweet finish. A great showing. (With Greg, AG, Dan and Jamie)

(Vietti Barolo Villero Riserva) Have not had much '82 Barolo and now I am on the hunt for some. Captivatin aromas of beautiful dried roses, tar, dried cherries, exotic dried citrus, underbrush. As they say the full Piedmont symphony came to perform this afternoon. The palate was massive with unreal concentration. Explosive finish that kept giving and giving. Dark wine with really ripe but still pretty blocky tannins. This has a long life ahead of it. Profound stuff.

Chicago Wine Flock...Gary Opening Well Aged Barolo (Ada Street - Chicago IL): Open and decanted 3-4+ hours before serving. Equal amounts of red and black cherry, oddly compact and tight. Dense, seemingly backward with modest spice. Not as interesting as another bottle from 5+ years ago.

Double Blind Tasting and Dinner (David Burke's Primehouse - Chicago IL): Tasted double blind. Lots of red and black cherry, licorice, slightly floral, with moderate earthy aromas. Similar fruit profile on palate with very crisp acidity, good textures, good length and finesse.
