I'm still not sure exactly where this came from, but it was an unexpected surprise when grabbing for a random bottle late at night. This wine is nearly black and light is pretty much impenetrable and it has a degree of sediment that creeps into the Port realm. The visual really informs just about everything you need to know about this. The fruits skew towards blackberries and ripe plums, maybe a little stewed, supported by slightly bitter notes of dark chocolate, licorice and espresso. Lots of oak, but it avoids the gloppy vanilla and it has more of a toffee, almost Bourbon barrel, sort of vibe, with accompanying clove and nutmeg. The tannins are fully integrated, but there is a bit of a grainy quality and the wine is generally textured by the level of sediment. Reading all of this, I think I would hate it, but there is a charm to this. This is the sort of wine that you should only drink on a cold night, sort of a dry substitute for Amarone or Port. If wine had an opposite of a fresh spring day, this might be it.

This was throwing a ton of sediment, so either double decanting this or plan on chewing on a bit of it. Inky garnet, with a fair degree of bricking at the rim. Pretty reluctant on the nose and mostly reads "big red wine", rather than being really delineated. This is very ripe and extracted, but not overwhelming. Mostly black fruited, with notes of tar, licorice and graphite. Sort of drinks like a Cab/Syrah blend, but it could be either, even though it is Petit Sirah and in that sense it is a little anonymous. Grainy tannins rear up a bit on the finish. This was a little simple and monolithic, but still pretty tasty. Good BBQ wine that would pair well with any grilled large animal. This has the stuffing to hang on for a while, but I don't see it developing any complexity.

A big, beautiful and beautifully drinking Greg Brown petit sirah. A very good QPR wine and with proper cellaring my guess is it has at least another 3-5 years to go. As is true for all of Greg's wines this is one of the most heavily sedimented wines that I have come across and benefits from both filtering as well as decanting. Inky dark teeth-staining purple, big and very full bodied with still very present but softening tannins and at this point much softer and much better balanced then even just 2-3 years ago. A very nice long lingering aftertaste. Nose much softer then on previous bottles but still dark and floral with loads of dark stone fruit, coffee and tobacco and a dark but now much more cohesive flavor profile of dominant dark fruit up front but also earthier notes of leather, chocolate and mushrooms later on the palate. Definitely recommend this wine.

Big dark inky - thought it would be a monster, but it was nicely balanced. Plush and full, pronounced fruit but not out of whack. Went lovely with the lamb.

I only got better. But bad because it is my last bottle. It smoothed out even more this year...enjoyed it much.
