  • Christies London Dinner hosted by Johnny Symington - wines from the Symington Family reserves.
The year my Dad was sunk on the Exeter! (He survived).
The first thing that struck me was that the colour showed no more age than the 1970 (noted). Force majeure (aka WWII) meant that this vintage could only be bottled in 1945 after three years in cask rather than the normal two - and then in sherry bottles as the only available glass.
The fruit was wonderful; concentrated not over-sweet wild strawberry, mint and herbs in racy delicate frame with only a touch of spirit heat to indicate an older wine. Perfect balance. Very long.
No need to keep, but from now I honestly think that this wine has the structure to last longer than the 1970; 10 years perhaps - but can you get hold of a bottle to prove it!!?
A genuine privilege and fitting end to the dinner. 95+
