  • Flowers, orange peels and wood. Fresh young fruits. Reminded me of a chambolle crossed with a NSG for some reason. Not too bad really. Very old worldish in fact. I quite like it. Unabrasive and pleasant.

  • IWFS AGM Dinner (Matsugawa, the Pines Club): Very decent new world Pinot. I guessed this as a South African, but could not quite place it as a Meerlust. Nose had a slightly burnt toasty aspect to it, along with a very typical SA charred rubber, menthol note. Beyond that though, there was a nice mix of meaty, truffly, herby savoury notes with with sweeter kirsch and creme de cassis fruit with a touch of peppery spice. More rubber on the attack on the palate, but nothing overwhelming. Instead, there was nice clann acidity, fine tannins and lots of plush ripe cherries and red fruit held in very good balance. Little bits of flower, more savoury inflections and just that bit of green pepper rounded the wine off towards the mid-palate. Finish kicked in with some mouthfilling spices, orange peel and a touch of herbally, mentholly bramble. Lots going on here - not altogether integrated, but still a nice wine.
