This is a difficult wine to evaluate because at 8+ years of age it remains so opaque and closed-in, almost as if it were holding a secret it did not want to divulge. In many ways it is much like an old-fashioned Bordeaux before Michel Rolland and the "international" style of earlier drinkability through the emphasis of fruit, new oak and alcohol, and by minimizing tannin.
Many 2002 California Cabernets, including those from Napa Valley, are already on their decline, yet this is very much the exception. Having tasted it numerous times over its lifetime, I find it finally waking up from its slumber like a vinous version of Rip van Winkle.
Yet wine lovers shouldn't get their expectations up too high: It's still rough, not-quite-ready and not quite appropriate for the Cabernet faint-of-heart.
If, however, you are a wine aficionado who is desirous of delving into a wine that is more old-style Cahors (known for its longevity) than Napa Valley, this Della's is definitely a bottle to try.
