I let this air for about 90 minutes. Soft transparent red color. Faint aromas of red fruits. Smooth and polished on the palate. Muted red fruits and a distinct green note. Fine, drying tannins. Nice acidity and balance. Finishes long but faint with dark fruits. Past peak but it must have been lovely in its youth.

Purchased at auction with reported good provenance. Still with light purplish color and mild bricking. On the nose matured cabernet nose with strong herbs and some musty cherries. Initially a little thin on the palate with a bordeaux-like herbaceous quality to the fruit. Good balancing acidity and light tannins which again, gave it a thinner feel to the body. Not much improved in the first two hours. Started by finally come around on hour 3 although not much wine left at that point. The best was at the end where the fruit fleshed out a little more, the tannins rounded out and expanded giving the fruit more body. Some gravel character came out with the herbaceous character also becoming more integrated. Finish also went a little longer. Best sip was the last.
Always a crapshoot when it comes to these older wines. Some fall off a cliff after the first hour. Some come to life hours later. You never know. This one clearly needed more air. Started off around 88, ended around 92. I give the wine the benefit of the last sip with my score. Perhaps these reserve wines with good acidity can use more air after opening? Who knows. Perhaps the job of old wine lovers to go on this masochistic journey.

Upon opening we thought... vinegar. Put it back In The bottle and opened something else.
Two hours later went back and WOW! Funk was gone and the fruit shined. Tannins were showing beautiful and it was still pretty complex. No question this should be drank now, but don’t be scared upon opening!!
This was a very cool bottle to drink and kept showing different things as we drank over the next hour. ****grab a screen or filter- this thing had load of sediment that needs to be pulled out.

drank over 3 days; just amazing 1990 napa wine; still has a lot of tannins left; after 1 hour, the initial funk went away and left with earth, leather, and mushroom; wine still taste fresh (amazing); what a wonderful experience; 3 left in the cellar
