  • Horizontal Tasting of '99 Santa Rita Reds - 40% Petit Sirah, 40% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. Blackberry-blueberry compote, dried plum, tobacco, spice box, black pepper. A little volatile acidity on the nose, rustic on the edges and slightly sour finish.

  • In honor of the great winemakers of the Sta. Rita Hills appellation, and just to make sure I don't confuse myself and open this up to find it's NOT California Pinot Noir (tongue firmly in cheek), I am consuming my Chilean Santa Rita. This is 40 PS, 40 Merlot, and 20 Cab. Sauv., 14.5% alcohol. Decanted for about two hours. Sort of a ruby color with hint of violet, fairly dark, but not too dense. Aroma has lots of heat, some faint cedar, some mushroom, and just a hint of blueberry. On the palate it's kind of thin, but I taste the PS's blackberry, then some mocha, then some currant with just a hint of herbs and spice and some light tannins, almost a tour through all three components. Leads to an OK currant finish. I first had this at Fogo de Chao, it's a good match for that kind of cuisine. Probably worth cellaring for a few years, but hey, since the Chileans don't think I can keep all these Santa Ritas straight, bye-bye Santa Rita...
