no decant; 18c; clear, bricked-red; nose of tar and herbs; tense grip, sharp tannins, fruit is a bit thin; bright schist, raspberries, cherries, herbs; solid, classic in style, but lacking Barolo 'mystery'; 17.5

Barolo, on the last Thursday of April (Willamette Wine Storage - Portland, OR): The scents remind me of salmon baked with dark cherries. Some strawberry scents appear as well. The strawberries deliver right away on the palate, and they are enjoyably tangy. Balanced tannins work their way across the palate, but they get a little rough way out on the finish. The wine is quite approachable, and the fruit is good and consistent across the entire experience.

Last Thursday tasting group: Pre-2001 Barolo (Willamette Wine Storage - Portland, OR): Dark fruit profile on the nose, reduced cherries, coffee, chocolate, pie crust. Comparatively it doesn't smell like the other wines. Big feel in the mouth, balanced firm structure to the big fruit attack on the palate, mostly all fruit with very, very little of the typical graphite flavors you typically see. Unlike the other wines, very modern, and very basic on the palate. A nice wine for sure, well built, just overshadowed by the company.

Purchased at a restaruant. Initially very tight. Some wood with plums. Initial taste was a wall of tannin and acidity. After an hour in the decanter, it became fruiter with plums and strawberries. Also hints of chocalate and tar. Still very tight. Seems like it has the structure to improve more, although the fruit is somewhat limited. Not clear if the fruit will outlast the tannins.

decanted 1.5 hours. dark crimson w/garnet edge; pretty floral, fruit-driven aromatics, black cherry balsamic, high-toned & clean; med/+ palate weight; ripe cherry, red berry, quite perfumey in the mouth, tannins & acids resolved & integrated; not particularly complex but sound & satisfying.
braised chicken thighs w/bacon, fennel & tomato ragout; caramelized cauliflower in brown butter w/gremolata, capers, anchovies & roasted red pimientos
