All the cassis and tobacco you could ever wish for. Truly a stunning wine, yet I feel we are still a while away from peak drinking window. Will revisit in 2027.

Margaux Extravaganza: Margaux vs. Palmer vs. Brane over two decades (1996/2009/2015). Given the pedigree of the vintages, particularly for Chateau Margaux, expectations were quite high, but especially the last two vintages didn't live up to past performances (I've previously rated Ch. Margaux up to 100pts, Ch. Margaux 2015 up to 99pts, and Palmer 2009 98pts) at first. There were some overripe aromas that were too prominent and an uncharacteristic imbalance. Of course, Ch. Margaux and Palmer showed remarkable complexity and precision, but the balance was a bit off. Still, these are some good to great wines, especially on day 2 and with more air they got better and better. Ultimately, Ch. Margaux 2015 (96pts) was the winner with its unique aromatic profile, slightly outperforming the 1996 and 2009 vintages, both at 95pts. Brane and Palmer were a notch or two below, with the Palmer 2015 particularly affected by premature oxidation. I don't doubt the potential of these wines, given the many fine examples I had last year, but I wouldn't open them today.
TN: In a big 2009 retrospective tasting 5 years ago, this Palmer was the group’s number 1 wine out of 48 reds thanks to an unbelievable purity and lightness. This bottle not was not on the same level with the fruit clearly appearing too ripe, too dark and even some soy sauce/oxidation notes shining through. Not overly complex and not the light and airy, this was drinking at 88pts at best. I’ve tasted it again on day two and it showed markedly improved: much more balanced and elegant, with a not too ripe, red fruit and floral driven core, some coffee, earthy and herbal notes to balance. I scored it 93/94pts on day two. Hence, I would give this wine quite a bit of air.

Wow. This is just stunning. Really has come together after a slightly disjointed youth. Stunning balance and mouthfeel. Ripe and heathy and glossy fruit. So much Merlot but so much depth and texture. So different from Pomerol with a same Merlot composition. Very thought provoking and profound.Needs more time to develop aromatics but this is a great Palmer!!
Opened one of my two bottles of the 2009 Palmer, big decision given the opportunity cost of a better drinking window. The special occasion was Christmas Eve dinner with my 83 year old mother, who has a fondness for Walmart’s house Merlot. Actually kind of humorous as we started with a 2018 Sherwin Family cab before dinner, which she loved. As we had the pregame wine, the Palmer was decanting for just under an hour and the beef tenderloin was on the grill. Upon the first few sips my mother had a slight preference for the Napa cab, but once I had her pair the two wines with the tenderloin it was a game changer. The Palmer was absolutely amazing. Notes of blackberry & cassis, hints of cedar with a touch of bitter chocolate, the wine was at a different level. End result is that this world now has one more Bordeaux fan, much at the expense of Walmart and their wine department.

Great from the PnP. Some nice earthy tertiary flavors. Plenty of life but also on a nice place at the moment.
