Popped and poured at cellar temperature. Jet black and initially very tannic and monolithic which was alarming for an 18 year old Syrah. But with just a few minutes in the glass this opened up a touch with notes of dense black fruits and a little pencil lead. On the palate this is much rounder and more accessible, with mocha, black cherries and leather. I never tasted this young, so perhaps the fruit is fading, but it was a great match with a rump steak. Great fun drinking an early-days Red Car.

Deep red color. Aromas of blueberries, bitter chocolate and wood spices. Ripe, beautifully integrated and balanced fruit in the mouth with excellent depth and length. Very long and suave on the palate. This wine was unusually complex for a California Syrah. Still very fresh at 12 years of age.

Needed a good decant. Pleasant Syrah, but a little muddled, could be fading.
