So this is the third time reviewing this wine, a first for me. This time I bought the bottle, brought it home, and decanted. Compared to tasting in a formal environment, or a glass in a friends house, decanting at home is very much preferable. This wine is a find. No one is buying it, so our local wine retailer is discounting. This is a refined, well conceived, well made wine, and a steal at $9. There is dark magenta color. You know it is Carmenere from Chile on the nose. That same rustic, earthiness transfers to the palate, but the decanting, with some help from a little bottle age, has released a really nice boysenberry and blueberry fruitiness. Just thick and rich enough to show some character, and just elegant enough to dance softly across the palate. I'm sure there is a big hit of medium heavy toast oak, that brings a touch of mocha and chocolate. Some vanilla on the roof of the mouth. The tannins are still quite dry, possibly anticipating releasing with some more bottle age. This wine is certified organic, and like other offerings from this producer, seems so integrated and harmonious. The mid palate, and for that matter, the finish are not complex enough for a better score. There is what seems to be a touch of eucalyptus, or maybe mint on the finish, with some cola, black cherry, and graphite.

So we tried this wine again, almost a year since we met the US rep and tasted through his portfolio. This is good wine. Their style is clean, soft, and polished wines. You almost don't know this is Carmenere, in a good way. Some of that rusticity we found last year has dissipated and evolved. It still has some of those trademark Carmenere flavors like black tea, and sassafras root, and typical Chilean flavors like tree bark, cinnamon, and graphite. The fruit is almost big, but well restrained. The components have integrated. We almost wish they would have let some of those secondary, unique to Chile, hard to describe flavors and aromas appear. This is well worth $9 a bottle, and might even benefit from one more year in bottle. Nice job.

Emeliana Wine Tasting at Gervais & Vine Columbia, SC: This is their fruit forward, smooth easy drinking rendition. The vibrant, heavy duty blackberry fruit jumps right out at you. There are plenty of other components to back this up. Some of that rustic, cocoa and tea structure. Just enough tannin on the roof of the mouth. Quite heavy. Dark cherry backs up the blackberry. The typical Carmenere spiciness is well under control. A hint of chocolate on the finish.

Maybe I just don't like the style, but this is plain, ordinary, and slightly bitter. But it is wine, so it has that going for it.
