Better than I remember. Seems to have put on weight since my last bottle. Nose is nice with red berry fruits, spice, minerality, and just a hint of game. The palate is definitely driven by acidity, but has a bit more rounded feel than I remember and has fleshed out some. Overall this is good, but not great. However in the current scheme of Burgundy pricing this quality for under $40 is great.

Darker in color than most Volnay, nose of cherry and spice on a lovely nose. Palate with nice acidity, tannins that still need a bit of mellowing. Finish is good. Overall a pretty good burgundy for the price.

To celebrate the absence of plans, we cooked a feast. Slow cooked BBQ filet mignon, roasted beet salad with orange vinaigrette, and slow cooked fresh fennel. For some reason, the Spring-like weather caused me to reach for a red Meursault. This wine is a pinot noir based wine. Fearing that the wine might be too young or too oaked to drink, I decanted the wine for 4 hours. There was no need. This is a light table-style red. A pleasant, but forgettable quaff to enjoy with food, but not much here apart from that. I would describe the wine as thin and watery, with light cherry notes. On the plus side, it is only 13.5% alcohol, making it perfect for food. Nonetheless, I will not remember this wine.

While I give this a 91 it is no longer my style from previous vintages. While the older vintages were truly representative of the old world Volnay, this vintage is expression much more new world characteristics. It was actually described as 'jammy', Gamay like which was reflective of its lavender notes, etc. jammy in that it had particularly more body than previous vintages and more oak. Very angular which may be because of its youth and perhaps all of my consternation will fade with time in bottle. While approachable now I'm not certain much will change over time unless the fruit forwardness will subside. If you like syrupy style syrah or big Gamay you might like this wine. It is good, just not my style so I must be fair in my scoring.

Volnay And Surrounding Communes (Our House (2033 Brandywine St., Philadelphia)): Muted. Probably corked, but I was a bit uncertain.
