As its names suggests, the Heavyweight really is big and powerful wine. When first opened, the wine was very spicy and intense. It took nearly a 3 hour decant to calm the beast down and when it finally did, fantastic flavors of creme de cassis, licorice, chocolate, mint, leather, and black pepper saturated the palate. Surprisingly not very ripe given the 2007 vintage, but beautifully balanced and structured with a long 40 second finish. This is drinking great now with a 3 hour decant and still has about 4-5 years left before heading downwards.

Gorgeous, complex nose. Rosemary bush, fresh and dried herbs. Licorice. Flavors of black currant. Beautiful texture and balance. Good finish. Like many Behrens wines that seem to accomplish a feat of being very drinkable yet able to keep without losing anything. This is beautiful now but I think has many years left.

Great nose, dark fruit, cassis, tobacco and long finish. Paired well with burgers from Portillo’s.
