Knights of Alba (KOA) BYO Barbaresco Dinner (Legacy Records): Another Gaja which was definitely a theme of the night. Unfortunately bottle was just a bit off and I got some of the cardboard that is the tell-tale sign. There’s something behind that but hard to really get there. Too bad.

Got it as a gift from my husband who bought it at an auction. Was afraid this would be dead but it still presented nice flavours, quite subdued and probably already a bit downhill from its peak. Shy at first but opened up with cherries and raspberry candies on the nose after a few minutes. Rose water, violets and perfume later on on the palate. Lastly presented some truffles and mushrooms before it fell flat in the glass after maybe three hours of joy, sniffing and drinking.
Gaja White Truffle Dinner (Osteria Langhe - Chicago IL): Pale red and brown color. Charming floral aromas with slightly more earth than lingering fruit. Palate is less exciting, more tired, still ending with a firm finish. Probably a decade past its peak. Probably over-aerated, with this bottle double decanted several hours before serving.

White Truffles & Nebbiolo (Chez Nanda): Double decanted ~9 hours before serving. Big smoke and tar filled aromatics. Rich fruit and still chewy tannin. Mature but still has plenty of stuffing for a 45-year old. Persistent finish.

Classic aromas of roses & tar, quite delicate. Lacks depth and faded, yet still tasty. Color was unusually light & transparent.
