  • 10 years old?? Pfft! You would never even think it. This bottle was fresh as a daisy, even after being found in the basement of a PLCB Wine & Spirits state store, being stored standing up for God knows how long. Beautiful golden color typical of aged Riesling. Upon first pour, nose is slightly muted, just showing some crushed Golden Delicious apple and a whisper of diesel/petrol. After an hour of air time, this really starts to sing with white flower, ginger (almost some Gewurz characteristics), lime, herbs, and, naturally, lots of minerals. Very powerful nose on this wine, could sit and smell this for hours. The palate is still bright and fresh with great tingling acidity showing lots of pit fruits, orange zest, kumquat, and finishes with beautiful tropical fruit like guava and mango. It is just barely showing some age with a very slight walnut shell meets campfire smoke flavor profile on the midpalate leading to the finish, which I found very intriguing. The intensity dies down a bit on the midpalate when compared to the strong initial attack and long finish, but overall this is a very nice wine (although I do think the nose on this was slightly better than that actual palate here). Showing less age than many red wines half it's age, I think this will still gain complexity for another 5 years or so. If drinking now definitely give it plenty of air. I recently tasted the 2007 Terrassen bottling from Pichler, which was painfully young, so I am convinced these wines are built for the long haul. Definitely worth the $16 I paid for this; I am glad that I have one more bottle left to revisit in a couple years! 91+.
