  • 14.3% alcohol and 164 cases produced. Even after 15 years, inky purple center with a violet rim and no signs of bricking. The nose explodes from the glass with ripe blackberry, black cherry, cedar, and vanilla notes. In the mouth, this is a classic Napa wine packed with dense black fruit, blackberry, blueberry, and cherry, in addition to some oak notes of chocolate and vanilla. Full-bodied and dense, this wine has a plush mouthfeel with some tannin still present, but it is not harsh or intrusive on the long finish. Consumed with medium-rare steak, asparagus, mashed potatoes, and house rolls for Thanksgiving. This wine paired well with the steak, as expected, but it was also big enough to handle the asparagus, which was a bit of a surprise. Overall, I really enjoyed this wine for its dense fruit and scale, and while we all preferred the more complex 1996 Sociando-Mallet, I cannot wait to taste another bottle in 10 more years.

  • I’ve loved some Bevan, like Ontogeny and really had a dislike for his overextracted, syrupy style in others. But like the man himself, his offerings swing back and forth from elegant to heavy and unyielding. This offering from his very successful 2008s was excellent. For sure it was deep, dark and rich, but age had mellowed it. The dark cherry fruit was part of an overall balance with blueberry on the nose as well. I drank it as part of a new world tasting so the whole flight was a little overwhelming but this bottle by itself, accompanied by a rich winter meal would have made a memorable night.

  • Sine Qua Non (SQN) Magnum Extravaganza + Bevan, Mike Smith, Sparkling/Champagne, and others (Calistoga): From .750. Interesting the differences between this bottle and the magnum from the day before. This bottle was just as smooth and beautiful, but noticeably less intense and more medium in its delivery of flavors. It was better a little colder (<52 degrees). As it warmed up, it became a little flatter, especially on the back end.

Though I personally favored the more impassioned juice from yesterday’s magnum, this wine from .750 was still beautifully sleek and alluring. Drink your .750s now.

  • Calistoga Inn Restaurant & Brewery - Aubert, Shafer, Bevan, Sea Smoke, Togni, and more... (Calistoga): From magnum. The most polished of the three 2008 Bevans tasted (Alexis, Danger D, David's). A little less intense and powerful than the broader-shouldered Danger D, but still displaying wonderful energy. Showing a little bit of age, with some earth and tobacco leaf, but still kicking out a solid core of black and red berry fruit that weighed perfectly on the palate. The finish was smooth and seamless, with a nice final push of fruit on the back end that held interest. Drinking at its peak now. 95 points.
