Visit at Domaine Baudry: Wow! Very beautiful old aged Chinon. Spice, acidity and elegance. Alive. Has some smokiness, tobacco leave and some iode. Guessed a bit older vintage of one of the limestone cuvee - wrong : it was the sandy / gravel Grezeaux 96! 1996 apparently took time to show up, and the strong acidity of the vintage makes it a long live wine. It clearly has the stuffing to age further - but why wait this is fantastic.

I expected a lot from this bottle. I’ve hoarded my last 1996 Grézeaux since 2007. This wine may be immortal. It is still young and fresh and vibrant. Kaleidoscopic nose, fresh palate with excellent length. The best Grézeaux ever made and one of the best, if not the best, wines from Chinon I’ve ever had. Fool me for not hoarding cases of this. I don’t think there is a counterpart to this vintage among modern iterations. 2002 probably comes the closest, but lacks the zing and zest of 1996. Truly great wine. Wow.

Drinks at the North End Grill with Matt L. in town (NYC): Opened this with a little trepidation as to whether it may hold its own on a table laden with big name Bordeaux like Figeac, Haut-Brion and Gruaud Larose. Stupid me, I shouldn't have worried, as this was a wow from the first sip and had most of the table hooked right away. Spectacular aromatics, a fragrance I could have kept enjoying most of the night if this didn't also taste so great. Such a vivid earthy mineral character, forestal greenness, leather, tobacco and pure dark fruited flavours all coming together harmoniously, and an amazingly elegant, seamless palate presence.

Dinner in NYC (North End Grill - New York, NY): Killer stuff. Kinda reminded me of a 1995 Cheval Blanc I had in mid-2012...maybe not as rich, but close. What this didn't have in richness, it made up for in elegance and earth. Lovely forestal, green pea, fresh cherry and dirt notes are perfectly Chinon. Many of us asked each other, "why we don't own more of these?" after finishing it. Remarkable.

Dinner With Alain Coudert, Francois Pinon, Marc Ollivier, and the Baudrys (Hundred Acres NYC): Some thought that this was still closed in on itself and that it should have been aerated overnight for best results (apparently this was only aerated for a few hours before consumption). Tasted pretty good to me. Unmistakeably Grezeaux with that wonderful gritty gravel thing that I always find in this cuvee. What was amazing about this wine was how young it was. There were some signs of secondary development, but I would really have trouble pegging this as 15+ years old.
