  • Still a great wine but past its best and no longer as convincing as before. Drink soon!

  • Interesting nose of cherries, plums/prunes, figs, cocoa, charcoal and tar. Palate is surprisingly elegant, dominated by rich red fruits rather than black fruits - cherries, smoked raspberries, red currants, blueberry, with some mocha, spice, and leather on the back palate. After an hour in the decanter it really opens up with the classic blueberry flavour complimented with a very distinct rhubarb note. Tannins are pleasant, alcohol is not overwhelming. The acidity, which I usually find to be Zinfandel's weak spot, started on the volatile side, but once again time in the decanter softened this into something beautiful and refreshing, particularly with food. Would be delicious with BBQ, but I had it with wild mushroom risotto, which was equally scrumptious. Can it see it standing up very well to full-flavoured tomato dishes. Elegant Zinfandel? From Australia? David Hohnen does it again.

  • Deep red colour, fantastic nose with blacberries and tobacco, beatiful deep flavours - blackberries, tobacco, liquorice - with lots of tannins. Still lots of power the following day. Will undoubtedly improve from resting a year or 2.

  • A notably light appearance on pouring. The nose has brambles, a bit of cocoa dust, some dried figs and a touch of eucalyptus giving it a nice lift. The vines might be from Lodi originally, but that's about all it shares with the type of Lodi Zinfandel found most commonly in the UK. This is light and subtly fragrant with great balance. It carries its 14.5% alcohol very well indeed, as have all the reds now I think about it. Though the Zinfandel particularly so.
