Vinetasters: Howell Mountain (Park Ridge, IL): Served double blind. Intense pyrazine with some Cordier funk to it -- I was almost certain this was Gruaud Larose given its charmless structure and complete lack of any ornamentation. Impressive in its stature but clearly a wine not meant to provide any pleasure (like Gruaud). My 7th, group's 9th.

Flock Tasting - First Editions: Full dark ruby. Lovely, effusive and complex aromatic profile has dark fruits, spice, herbs, cedar, tobacco and licorice. Palate is herb-driven with loads of nuanced complexity. Medium body with fine balance. I didn't get a lot of remaining structure. My #4, Group #6. La Jota's first vintage of Cab.

6 La Jota +Montelena+Dunn Tasting (Walnut Creek, Ca.): Dusty and fruity nose with lots of chocolate, rich, mellow, chocolate, angular fruit on the palate, needs 4 years to peak, great amount of fruit and tannin on the finish. My #5 and Group tied #4.

1982 California Cabernet Sauvignon (Hi-Time Wine Cellars, Costa Mesa, Ca.): Grassy, earthy but pleasant cabernet, good, rich fruit, strong stuff, needed time and shows tasty today.
