Community Tasting Notes (1)

  • At first there was a bright sweetness of confected fruit to the wine which made me fear it was Madeirised or at best laying down on its deathbed. The colour was more transparent than any other Madiran I’ve encountered though age may be a factor. There were lots of ripe, muscular and supple tannins on the finish though these were followed by some glaring acidity. After an hour this began to settle down and after 2/3 hours it was becoming quite elegant, relative to itself. At this stage there was still good fruit evident though overall there was a more savoury feel as smoky nuances wafted free. A lot of sediment got thrown in the glass which caused a sandy texture I wasn’t keen on, so maybe I should have let it stand for longer or perhaps I should have paid more attention to the decanting. Day 2: this one was still throwing up lots of sediment and, though mature, was still dominated by the strong tannic spine. There was appreciable fruit and hints of liquorice but overall the balance of flavours weren’t to my tastes. Perhaps the fruit was buckling under the weight of the structure. I preferred it the first night. There were times when I thought this wine was really good and others when I thought it was really awful. (may ’07)
