  • This old LBV port was found tucked away and forgotten amongst old boxes in the cellar of my father-in-law (now deceased). The first things I noticed was a little seepage around the cork and foil, and that the angels had taken the top two inches. Oh dear, I thought. I held out little hope that it would be anything but foul. After standing a few days we opened it last weekend, mostly out of curiosity. To our astonishment it was still alive and - Lovely! Certainly mature but oh, so nice. We indulged another glass last night and it has faded not at all.

It still gave off a rich and appealing aroma; slightly sweet to both nose and palate; no hint of spoilage. Colour was a light brown and rose tinged tawny. The first taste made me smile because of its gentle mouth-filling roundness. I appreciate that it is only a LBV but I have had older, proper VP's that were not as pleasing.

My father-in-law, a Yorkshireman, would have simply smiled and said, That'll do.
