d'Arenberg with Chester Osborn (Strand Cellars, Croydon): Served blind Dried herbs, spiced plums, sweet spice, leather, earth, a little raspberry and strawberry compote; quite a sweetly fruited nose, slightly dusty meaty underpin. In the mouth it's similarly fruited, tight chewy tannins, alcohol heat on the finish, the tannins are not drying but are slightly oaky. I guessed 1998 Grenache blend but couldn't work out if if was d'Arrys or Ironstone Pressing

Fairly pale and generally lighter than the 98 Shiraz I’ve been privileged to try. Nice nose, medium palate, good fruit ... it really acquired character with time.

Clear, pale, garnet to a broad graduated tawny rim. Clean, medium, fully developed (even past its best?), caramel, leather, vanilla, dust. Dry, medium acid, medium fully integrated tannin, medium (+) alcohol (14.5%), medium bodied, medium intensity caramel, leather, prune, cooked black cherry. Medium (+) length with caramel more pronounced on the finish.
Drink now, this is past its peak, the fruit almost gone, but this is a lovely 20 year old bottle of red wine, with so many aspects of tertiary development on display. As an aside, when paired with slow roast lamb shoulder the palate transforms, with far more black cherry fruit evident, a true delight!
Cork (good condition).

the tannins are gone and the fruit is on its way out leaving a rich almost sherry like wine - surprisingly delicious!
