Brilliant cedar and menthol on the palate with untold complexities. More direct on the palate with some sweetness. 95+ nose, 90+ palate to put it succinctly. Served with seared flannery, fresh braised short rib.

Haut Brion & La Mission Haut Brion: The first 20 minutes were promising with a core of black fruit and lots of cigar. However, the nose became progressively flatter and funkier; by the time the other wines were starting to open, the TCA had reared its head. Alas. A recent bottle of this was very good and I was looking forward to a second. No matter - we replaced it with the 64 La Mission which was held in reserve for such an event and I'm glad we did.

Ah, a delightful Haut Brion. The 1985 immediately came to mind; the two share a similar aromatic profile with suave black cherry and a character that emphasizes the Merlot. Nice base of cedar. A touch bricky but not as roasted as you'd expect from Mission. With air, lovely lavender and mineral notes came in and out. This required about an hour in the decanter to really unfurl itself aromatically and show the aromatic richness and class expected from Haut Brion. The hand reaches for a second glass.
Surely will last at this level for another 5+ years, but there's no reason not to drink it now. I found this more youthful than some other 62s. Of course, it's been kept well and I'm sure that bottles that have traveled extensively are probably not as lively as this.

(Château Haut-Brion) Medium brick red color; appealing, very mature, cedar, leather, tobacco, dusty currant nose; tasty, cedar, tart currant, dried currant, olive, tobacco palate; on the decline, but should go 15-20 years yet; long finish 93+ points

The 1959-2012 Haut-Brion dinner in Stockholm (Stockholm): An unusual vintage and an incredible wine. Completely youthful next to the 1959. Velvet, spices and elegantly balanced. Astonishing.
