  • A nice elegant cabernet; flavor profile consistent with previous notes. Not sure I'm a buyer at its $65 price tag though.

  • Friday Night Brown Bagger (Rich & Dana's): Nice dark color. Aromas of dark fruit- cassis & blackberry, with a subtle herb quality. Flavors of dark fruit dominate, hint of vanilla on the finish. Dark fruit really shines through, hint of brown sugar too; just slightly hollow in the midpalate but should fill out with age. 89-90 pts.

My other bottle for this tasting. I decanted this for an hour & a half before I left for the tasting. It too had about two hours in the open bottle before it appeared in the flight. Materra is a new project in the Oak Knoll District. Their debut releases are this 2007 Cabernet, and a 2007 Merlot (Oak Knoll AVA). The winemaking team is Mike Trujillo and Bruce Regalia.

  • From a bottle opened 24 hours earlier, this wine, made from fruit sourced in St. Helena, is inky crimson/garnet in color. It displayed notes of blackberry and cassis, along with black currants, mint and licorice. Black fruits dominate the palate, with good underlying acidity. Develops an herbal aroma as it sits in the glass. Again, tannins are evident but fine-grained and not obtrusive. Flavors of caramel, brown sugar and black fruits carry through the 30+ second finish. 89-90 pts.
