  • Lost this one in the cellar, but surprisingly very good. Initial strong nose of ripe olives (not pleasant), but that blew off in the first ten minutes to reveal a wine reminiscent of the northern Rhone that improved markedly over the next two hours.

  • CHOCOLATE AND STRAWBERRIES IN THE NOSE. BLACKBERRIES AND BLACK CHERRIES IN THE FLAVOR. MEDIUM TO LONG FINISH.

  • The second of two bottles. Served with BLTs and gazpacho (I know it's redundant, but we're overrun with tomatoes!). Appearance was lovely reddish-purple with some brown tones visible in the sunlight. At first the nose and palate were little but tar or wet rubber or something not very pleasant, but it improved a lot over the next two hours. Black fruits and a nice meaty element emerged (hence the bacon pairing). By the last glass it was really very good. Can't rate it higher because of a bitter note that never quite disappeared, but it was quite enjoyable nonetheless.

  • Curious experience, intriguing and a little disappointing. I decanted for a long time and the nose evolved (or should I say ping-ponged) between creamy vanilla notes, herbaceous minty notes, pure alcohol, toast, a variety of fruit notes; also went through a short but distinct bubble-gum phase which I enjoyed. But this all sounds more fun than it was. The problem is that it kept changing so unpredictably that I could never get much sense of a coherent structure. The taste was similarly all over the place. We were perfectly content to drink the wine but it just never came together in a fully engaging way. Also seemed to flatten out a bit over the course of the evening. The last bit I tried the next day and, other than a return of the creamy vanilla notes, it wasn't much different.

It's possible I actually decanted this bottle too long before beginning to drink but I wanted to make sure it opened fully (what's a neophyte oenophile to do?) Or maybe it's past its prime and the once-complex structure has begun to break back down into its component parts?

I have one more bottle-- I won't decant as early next time.

  • I liked this wine. Opened it up - no decanting. It was a little harsh at first but quickly became round and mellow. Earthy and berry notes in terms of smell. This is not a powerhouse Australian shiraz. It is well balanced with very long finish. Taste also of earth and berries. I think it is drinking very well now. I can't think of how it would develop further.
