Introduction

Eight of us gathered to try a new place in Northeast that has has some good buzz and is very wine friendly. The menu actually skews a bit to whites, but we had a good mix of both tonight.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2008 Pierre Gimonnet & Fils Champagne Special Club Millesimé de Collection 93 Points

    France, Champagne

Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. This was really firing tonight. Back to ehere it had been at peak. Maybe just bottle variation, maybe just me - but I loved it. This felt really pure and and focused tonight, a stream of fresh cut pear mixed with an almond creme brulee texture and great energy. I agree with Chablis28 that this really showed a nice mix of fruit and minerality that was just engaging.

  • NV Moët & Chandon Champagne Brut Imperial Rosé 89 Points

    France, Champagne

Light-medium salmon color. Drank a small glass over 20 minutes. This has come a long way from what it was several years ago. What was once a higher dosage has now given way to a crisp dry style that is so much better. Red fruits with a bit chalk and good balance compared to where this used to be. Not the most refined, but very enjoyable. 89 to 89+pts.

  • 2007 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 75 minutes. This bottle was a disappointment compared to previous bottles. Not oxed at all, but really lacked any energy and zip. The nose is subdued, mineral and lemon, but not effusive as one would expect. The palate seems simple and tired, marked by lemon zest and sour lemon with less distinct than usual minerality.

  • 1988 Olivier Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

Medium plus gold color. Speaking of tired, that's where this was. Not full on oxidized by any means, but nothing of distinction either. Citrus and tart, light weight and aged. Too bad, batted one out of three on these. The good one made it worthwhile anyway.

  • 2007 Domaine Roulot Meursault Les Luchets 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over an hour. Very nice, ocean mineral, citrus, custard, lemon cream, and very well integrated. These have been very consistent over the years, with this tailing off a bit from before. 91+ to 92pts.

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 2001 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Cicala 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Dark red color. Decanted 4 hours. Same bottle as Chablis28/Bellissimo. I thought this has a pretty steller nose; a crushed potpourri of dried roses, cedar box and nice red fruits. The palate was consistent with a fairly well developed poise already, deep cherry, creosote, spices, and what were soft tannins. Air and some cellar time has served this well and it is at a point it can be enjoyed without entirely sacrificing the future -- althoough this has a long life ahead.

  • 2008 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

This is still just a baby, but it shows its inner core of beauty. Lovely dried wood notes on the nose, lightly floral, dark red fruits follow. The palate is still very firm with drying tannins, wood, tart dark red fruits, tart cherry, a dose of minerality. This will benefit from cellar time aor a healthy decant presently. 90+ to 91pts.

Flight 3 (5 Notes)

  • 1991 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Marconnets 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

Medium brick red color with a 3mm clear margin. PNP, drank a glass over an hour plus. This was simply a well preserved and well aged example of red burgundy. I've liked this producer in the past and there have been some nice finds in these early ninety's wines. This had very distinct mineraity with blood meal and iron, tart cherry, a light medium body and a great deal of character. 91+pts.

  • 2000 Domaine René Engel Clos Vougeot 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Medium dark red color with a 1cm transitional edge. PNP, drank 1 glass over 75 minutes. This was in fine form, gorgeous nose of florals, dried spices, wood notes and red raspberry. The palate had a caressingly soft texture, elegant and balanced, medium bodied, damp forest floor with red berries and exquisite spice notes on a long finish. Likely fully resolved and good for several more years. 92+ to 93pts.

  • 1995 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Murky medium dark red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over an hour. A funky, damp, earthy nose with a bit of wet dog and saturated red fruits. The palate is also earthy, some tasty dank saturated red berries, sour berry, great mineral denisty and good depth. I found this more engaging than Craig tinight. Agree, not great, but darn good for me.

  • 2007 Domaine Tollot-Beaut Corton-Bressandes 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

I'm on the same page as Chablis28 on this. I loved the earthiness of this, very wet and dour in good way. The fruit has good purity, medium body and a more sour definition to the somewhat darker red fruits. This comes off with more finesse than expected. Very good, and I agree, may get just a tad better. 91+pts.

  • 2001 Domaine Y. Clerget Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

I'm always captivated by how good the Clerget wines usually turn out to be. This was nnow different. I've had this before and I think this bottle exceeded the previous one. This comes across as featherweight, refined, gorgeous pure red fruits, cherry, currants, dried forest floor and lifted spice notes. The back end offers up more tartness to the fruit and a burst of spice that leaves you refreshed and looking forward to the next sip. This is near resolution with fine grain integrating tannins and good complexity 92+ to 93pts.
