It was only a matter of time given the hundreds of thousands of words I've spilled across my tasting notes here. I'm proud to announce the launch of my own website devoted to the intersection of golf and wine: introducing swigcoach.com. If you belong to a golf club with a great wine list, have any other topics you’d like me to cover, want to crack a bottle, or need a fourth, be sure to swing by swigcoach.com and let me know.
2005 Château Langoa Barton

In the absolute zone right now. Deep, fully opaque red color with just a few hints of orange at the rim. I went at this slowly and it took about an hour (no decant) to really hit its stride. I finished it over two nights with no significant changes.
Beautiful notes of black currant, cedar and graphite on the nose. The aromas don't quite leap from the glass but it's a classic statement nonetheless. The fruit is ripe on the palate but quickly drenched in a wash of cedar, black peppery minerals and mint, supported by well integrated but persistent tannins. At 13% it conveys an overall impression that is very "claret-like," an almost cooling sensation on the palate that is quite enjoyable for casual sipping (and perfect with a grilled strip steak I might add!). As I said, it's at a peak right now that I project can go another 5-8 years and hold the fruit.

2019 Domaine Parent Ladoix 1er Cru La Corvée

What does it say when you go down to your cellar and find things that you not only don't recall buying but have no idea who the producer even is? To paraphrase the famous Harry Waugh, not since lunch I guess.
Such was the case with this discovery. I had to look up A & C Parent (that's how it's labeled), where I learned it's a very old domaine in Pommard now in control of the able Anne Parent (that's the "A" part.) Farming has been organic and fully Demeter certified biodynamic in 2020. An ancestor was Thomas Jefferson's wine advisor, according to Jasper Morris. They own .39 HA in Ladoix in addition to better known holdings in nearby Corton and of course Pommard.
This wine has a swoon-worthy dark red-fruited nose, with prominent deep black cherry and earth notes. It's premium cru in weight and texture on the palate, conveying a sort of rock-like structure and depth that surprised me, although that may just be my lack of familiarity with Ladoix. Fruit is terrific on the palate culminating in a positive if slightly rustic finish with perhaps a touch of warmth.
I would not have been one bit surprised to learn this was from Corton itself or even Nuits-Saint-Georges. Lucky for me I have two more bottles and next time I'll know what the heck I've got in my hand. I found it very rewarding now but there's a decade of upside easy.

2022 Château du Hureau Saumur Argile
4/4/2024 - bevetroppo Likes this wine: 88 Points
30 yr. old vines, native yeasts, fully organic farming. Fermented in vats and then spends 9 months in neutral barrels.
Relatively pale yellow straw. Nose features Granny Smith apple, green plum, fresh hay and chalky minerals, but the fruit is restrained overall. High acidity confirmed almost immediately on the barely medium weight palate, almost choked me first time through. There's a buzzy vein of grassiness reminiscent of sauvignon blanc, light fruits, and a crisp, bone dry, lingering finish that conveys an overall green impression, however vague that may be. i've had this wine before in other vintages and I'll have to check, but don't remember it being quite so tight. Light fare and cheeses for now...
