2017 Château La Vieille Cure

Still very youthful-looking in the glass. An attractive, dark crimson almost right up to the edge. Very expressive on the nose. Complex, alluring scents of flowers, earth, pine needles and spice jump from the glass. Full-bodied, rich and plush in texture. Definitely modern in style - but not overdone. Loaded with juicy, ripe plum and dark currant fruit character, with a huge dose of sweet baking spices. Almost like liquid gingerbread. There's excellent depth on the mid-palate and the long finish features silky tannins that are well-integrated. Quite a unique flavor profile for a Fronsac. So unusual, complex and delicious. 92++

2016 Château d'Issan

Brought with us to Seared 1200 steakhouse in St. Pete Beach, so this did not get a lengthy decanting. A very attractive, semi-opaque magenta in color - right up to the edge. The nose on this was just fabulous. Very pretty and captivating scents of flowers, earth and cedar fill the glass. Extremely elegant in texture and weight. Offers a delicious combination of tangy plum and dark currant fruit, deftly matched to a moderate acidity. There’s good depth to the mid-palate. Complex notes of iron, mineral and coffee grace the long, polished finish. The dusty tannins are integrating nicely. Poised, well-balanced and delicious. This is a charming, textbook Margaux with a distinctly old-school feel.

2015 Tenuta Guado al Tasso (Antinori) Bolgheri Superiore

From magnum. Brought with us to Prime 88 in Brooksville to share with friends. Still a youthful-looking, dark magenta in color - right up to the edge. Very powerful and complex aromas of leather, tobacco, baking spices and Tuscan soil on the nose. On the palate this took a good 45 minutes to finally open up. Kept getting better and better throughout the evening. Full-bodied and rich in texture, but not over done. Bursting with a dazzling assortment of dark currant, plum and blackberry fruit flavors. Shows excellent depth and focus on the mid-palate. Finishes extremely long with prominent notes of licorice, spice and mineral. The velvety tannins are just beginning to integrate in this format. Complex, harmonious and delicious. A magnificent Guado al Tasso that is powerful, yet elegant. Paired beautifully with the Porterhouse for two that Kerry and I shared.
