  • 1999 Château Monbousquet

Showing black fruit and earthy qualities right on opening, seemed a bit tight at first so I decanted it. It was showing blackberries and iron/forest floor with mostly integrated grape tannins. Stayed more on the secondary flavors side but with enough acidity to finish nicely. Serving it with a bison ribeye brought out more of dark fruit and the medium level of acid structure was enough for a leaner steak. It was quite enjoyable for the first hour or so then started losing some of the body and fruit after that so I believe it is a drink now/soon wine.

  • 1977 Warre Porto Vintage

Consumed over about 6 days... so notes of how it evolved over that time. Started with intense pluminess and elements of both kirsch and framboise liquors and just enough acid structure to balance. It did seem a little clumsy on the first night, but was pretty good trying it with some stilton and a bit of a date walnut bar. I left it for a couple of nights gassed and back in the wine cooler. With 48 hours the it lost the clumsiness and came across more integrated and balanced as it's most enjoyable which it stayed at for the next 2-3 days. The main falloff was late in the bottle since I didn't decant and filter it upon opening, but filtered into a small decanter as I poured out glasses. It just lost a bit of freshness at the very end. I think it is a nice port, but seems like it is ready to go probably before and certainly now.

  • 2018 Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon Pouilly-Fuissé En Chatenay

This is one of my favorite Pouilly wines. It has a mix of apple and pear with some garden flowers then the crisp apple/pear comes through on the palate with savory creaminess in the middle and sharp minerality in the finish. Really a nice wine and worth the extra cost compared to many every-day Pouilly wines. They can certainly be held for much longer, but I think they are great between 4-6 years so I'll probably never find out what a 10 or 15 year old one is like.
